1. What it is
YouTube is a free video platform with millions of backing tracks, play-along videos, tutorials and performances you can stream straight to the classroom iPad.
2. Why it’s great for young learners
Playing along to a backing track makes a simple piece sound full and exciting, which keeps young students motivated. Watching a short performance of a piece they’re learning gives them a goal to aim for, and a 30-second clip can re-set focus when energy dips.
3. Best use case
Main activity & warm-up. Use a backing track during the main part of the lesson so the student performs rather than just practises. Use a short inspiration clip at the start to introduce a new piece, or at the end as a reward.
4. iPad-specific notes
Screen layout: Tap the video once to show controls; tap the full-screen icon (bottom-right) before mirroring.
Rotation: Hold the iPad in landscape for full-screen video. Lock rotation if it keeps flipping (Control Centre → rotation lock).
Mirroring to a projector: Swipe into Control Centre → Screen Mirroring → choose your Apple TV. Put the video in full-screen after mirroring connects for the cleanest result.
Offline: Standard YouTube needs internet. There is no reliable free offline mode — have a backup track ready if the room’s wifi is patchy.
5. How to set it up
- Open Safari or the YouTube app on the classroom iPad.
- Search the piece plus “backing track” or “play along” (e.g. “Ode to Joy backing track easy”).
- Preview the track once before the lesson to check tempo and key.
- Add good tracks to a Watch Later playlist so you’re not searching mid-lesson.
- Mirror to the projector if the whole class is playing along.
6. Sample lesson idea
“Concert moment” (5–10 min). The student plays a piece they already know once on their own. Then you load a backing track at a comfortable tempo and they perform it again “with the band”. Finish by watching a 30-second clip of a real performance of the piece and ask: what’s one thing they did that we could try next week?
7. Troubleshooting
Track is too fast: Tap the gear icon → Playback speed → 0.75×.
Ads interrupt the flow: Queue the track early, or skip ads before the student starts playing.
Not full-screen when mirrored: Connect mirroring first, then tap full-screen on the video.
