1. What it is
Songsterr is a huge library of interactive tablature for guitar, bass, drums and more. The tab scrolls in time with playback, the current note is highlighted, and the student can slow the tempo down or loop a tricky section — so they read and hear the music at the same time.
2. Why it’s great for young learners
Learning a song they actually want to play is the single biggest motivator for a young student. Because the tab moves with the music and highlights each note, a learner who isn’t fluent at reading can still follow along and keep their place. Slowing the tempo lets them succeed at a hard bit before bringing it back up to speed.
3. Best use case
Main activity & home practice. Use it in the lesson to introduce a new song and isolate the tricky bars with the loop tool, then send the student home with the same song queued up to practise at a slower tempo.
4. iPad-specific notes
Screen layout: Use landscape so more bars are visible at once and the playback controls have room.
Rotation: Lock to landscape so the tab doesn’t reflow mid-song.
Mirroring: Mirrors cleanly to a projector — good for working through a riff together as a small group.
Offline: Needs internet to load tabs. Open the song before the lesson so it’s ready if wifi is patchy.
Free vs paid: The free version works in a browser with ads; the Plus subscription removes ads and unlocks full tempo and looping control.
5. How to set it up
- Open songsterr.com in Safari or Chrome (or the Songsterr app).
- Search the song title and pick the instrument tab you need (guitar, bass, etc.).
- Use the tempo control to slow playback down for learning.
- Drag across the bars you want to drill and turn on loop to repeat just that section.
- Add the song to the iPad Home Screen (Share → Add to Home Screen) for quick access next lesson.
6. Sample lesson idea
“Loop the hard bar” (10 min). Pick a song the student likes and find the one bar that’s tripping them up. Loop just that bar at 60% tempo until it’s clean, then nudge the tempo up 10% at a time. Finish by playing the whole phrase at full speed — they’ll feel the jump in confidence immediately.
7. Troubleshooting
Tab scrolls too fast: Lower the tempo with the speed control before pressing play.
Wrong tuning or instrument: Check the tab is for the right instrument; some songs have several versions.
Ads interrupting: Queue the song before the student starts, or use the Plus version for an ad-free lesson.
