1. What it is
A metronome is a tool that clicks a steady beat at a tempo you set. An online metronome runs straight in the iPad browser — set the beats per minute (BPM), tap start, and it keeps perfect time. Most also let you add an accent on beat one and show a visual pulse alongside the click.
2. Why it’s great for young learners
Keeping a steady beat is one of the hardest things for a young player, and it’s the foundation of playing with others. A metronome gives them an external pulse to lock onto, and the visual flash helps students who find the click hard to feel. Setting a slow tempo lets them play a passage accurately before speeding up — the single most effective practice habit you can teach.
3. Best use case
Throughout the lesson & home practice. Use it whenever timing slips: set a slow, achievable tempo, get the passage clean, then raise the BPM a few clicks at a time. Teach the student to use one at home for the same “slow then speed up” routine.
4. iPad-specific notes
Screen layout: Big, simple controls — the BPM number and start button are easy to tap mid-lesson.
Visual beat: Most online metronomes flash on each beat — great for students who feel the pulse better than they hear it.
Mirroring: Mirror to the projector so a group can watch the visual beat together.
Volume: Make sure the iPad isn’t on silent; the click runs through the speaker.
Offline: The website needs internet to load. A free metronome app gives you an offline backup for the lesson room.
5. How to set it up
- Open an online metronome (search “metronome”, or use a trusted one like web-based Metronome Plus).
- Set the BPM — start slower than the student thinks they need.
- Set the time signature / accent so beat one is emphasised.
- Press start and have the student clap or play along before adding their piece.
- Add the page to the iPad Home Screen, or keep a free metronome app as an offline backup.
6. Sample lesson idea
“Ladder up” (5 min). Pick a passage the student rushes. Set the metronome slow enough that they can play it perfectly. Play it twice cleanly, then raise the tempo by about 5 BPM and repeat. Keep climbing the ladder until it breaks down, then drop back one rung — that’s their practice tempo for the week.
7. Troubleshooting
No click sound: Check the iPad isn’t on silent and the browser tab isn’t muted.
Student can’t feel the beat: Use the visual flash and have them clap before playing.
Tempo too fast to stay with: Lower the BPM until they can play it perfectly — accuracy first, speed later.
